6 Old Controversial Ads You Wouldn’t Believe Existed

If you want to market your product, what first comes to your mind? Ads. Advertisements have always been the first step of marketing. In earlier days, they would mostly be on newspapers, billboards etc compared to the online world now. It used to be very difficult and expensive to get an ad earlier. Now anyone with an Instagram account can do it.

Although it was difficult to reach a lot people know about your business back then, censor board wasn’t very hard on them. You’ll see why these ads could be considered controversial.

1. The drink for babies

Controversial billboard ad

Coco Cola was new to the market and they advertised their drink by raising a question among people. The ad is literally encouraging parents to make their infants drink Coco Cola. Here’s the text from ad:

Laboratory tests over the last few years have proven that babies who start drinking soda during tha early formative period have a much higher chance of gaining acceptance and "fitting in" during those awkward pre-teen and teen years. So, do yourself a favor. Do your child a favor. Start them on a strict regimen of sodas and other sugary carbonated beverages right now.

And this is not true as we all know now. Don’t know how many kids fell victim to this. Now we know why we have censor board.

2. The smoking santa

The company surely didn’t believe in the story of Santa bringing presents to the kids. The aim of the ad was to suggest that a pack of Lucky Strikes would make the perfect gift for Christmas.
